Departure: 8:00 am (Day 1) – Arrival in La Rioja: approximately 9:00 pm (Day 2)
Day 1
We depart from La Rioja heading north, passing through Aimogasta, known as the cradle of olive cultivation, and continue toward Londres, in the neighboring province of Catamarca. There, we visit the Inca ruins of El Shincal de Quimivil, an important archaeological site that once served as the southern Inca capital of Cusco, the capital of Collasuyo (the southern region of the Tawantinsuyu, the Inca Empire).
Here, we enjoy a guided tour with a local site guide, observing the remaining structures, including the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon. After the visit, we continue to Belén, then travel on to Villa Vil, Indalecio Gorge, and the Cuesta de Randolfo, arriving at the village of El Peñón, located on the Andean Altiplano at 3,000 meters above sea level, where we spend the night.
Day 2
After breakfast, we head to Laguna Carachi Pampa, located at the foot of the Carachi Pampa Volcano, a perfectly shaped volcanic cone rising from the plain and covered with black basaltic rock. After circling the volcano to the south, we continue to the parking area of the extraordinary Pumice Stone Field (Campo de Piedra Pómez).
There, we have approximately one hour to enjoy a short trekking experience through its maze-like rock formations, created by pyroclastic flows from the Blanco Volcano. We then return to the village of El Peñón and begin our journey back to the city of La Rioja.
