102 – Chilecito and Cuesta de Miranda

Departure at 08:00 am – Return at 07:30 pm. Leaving from La Rioja city, we head south to Patquía, which means “crossroads”, a town where five roads converge. From there, we continue north, passing through Los Colorados—low mountain ranges rising from the arid landscape, displaying striking red tones. At the foot of these hills lies the cave once used by the Riojan caudillo Chacho Peñaloza, where he and his troops would hide, wait for, or evade the enemy. Continuing north through Catinzaco and Nonogasta, we arrive in Chilecito. There, we explore the impressive Famatina mountain range, visiting Santa Florentina, Cuesta de las Talas, Cable Car Station No. 2, and the Río del Oro. We also visit Cable Car Station No. 1 of the La Mejicana Mine, along with its museum, which showcases a remarkable exhibition on the monumental gold, copper, and silver mining operations carried out during the first half of the 20th century. We then tour the districts of Chilecito, visiting Samay Huasi, the former country house and museum of Dr. Joaquín Víctor González, now owned by the National University of La Plata. We also visit Cristo del Portezuelo and the wineries La Riojana or La Puerta, featuring tasting rooms and direct sales. In the afternoon, we ascend the picturesque Cuesta de Miranda up to the Monolith Viewpoint, offering spectacular panoramic views where greens, reds, and blues blend together, before returning to the city of La Rioja.
