Continue through the Quebrada del RÃo Belén toward the Andes, climbing the scenic Cuesta de Randolfo till 3000 m.a.s.l. to the Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve, home to wild vicuñas. In the afternoon, arrive in the picturesque highland village of El Peñón, gateway to the volcanic deserts of the Puna. Overnight stay. |
3 | El Peñón – Campo de Piedra Pómez – Antofagasta de la Sierra. Explore the extraordinary Campo de Piedra Pómez, a vast expanse of white pumice formations sculpted by wind and time. Continue across the high plateau among volcanoes like Carachi, El Jote, La Alumbrera, Antofagasta, and ancient lava fields, with visits to archaeological sites such as the Pucará de la Alumbrera. In the afternoon, arrive in Antofagasta de la Sierra, a remote oasis at over 3,400 meters above sea level. Overnight stay. |
4 | Antofagasta de la Sierra – Antofalla – Tolar Grande. Cross the immense Andean high plateau and the Cordillera de Calalaste to reach the remote village of Antofalla at the foot of the volcano of the same name (Volcano Antofalla 6.420 m.a.s.l.). Visit to the Antofalla salt flat and Ojos del Campo.Continue north into Salta Province, skirting the edge of the vast Salar de Arizaro and visiting the iconic Cono de Arita, one of the most striking natural landmarks in the Puna. 5 | Tolar Grande – Pocitos – San Antonio de los Cobres. Visit the Ojos de Mar, cross the Desierto del Diablo and the scenic Siete Curvas, then continue through the salt flats of Pocitos and Cauchari, rounding the southern slopes of Volcán Tuzgle. Re-enter Salta and descend via Abra Chorrillos to visit the iconic Viaducto La Polvorilla, part of the famous Train to the Clouds route. Arrival in San Antonio de los Cobres in the afternoon. 6 | San Antonio de los Cobres – Salinas Grandes – Purmamarca. Cross into Jujuy Province to visit the dazzling white expanse of Salinas Grandes, where traditional salt extraction continues today.
